Famous Personalities
Punjabi Singers:
I think every Punjabi
knows Malkit Singh for his old time Punjabi songs "Gur Nalo Ishq Mita"
& "Tootak Tootak Tootiyan". Malkiat Singh was born in village Hussainpur,
Jalandhar and raised in Nakodar, Jalandhar, Punjab. Now, he is a famous U.K
based Punjabi Bhangra Singer. For studies; after schooling, Malkiat joined
Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar. I saw him participating at college functions
during his college days and one day came to know he is the same Malkiat Singh
when his old time Punjabi songs "Gur Nalo Ishq Mita" & "Tootak Tootak Tootiyan"
became very popular. Most of his other famous songs are "Kurri Garam Jayee",
as well as recently, "Chal Hun," and "Jind Mahi".
Sarbjit Cheema
was born at village Cheema Kalan (Jalandhar). He is the youngest of the three
siblings. From childhood, Cheema was fond of village games like Kabaddi, Hockey,
Football, Athletics, High jump and Long jump. In his childhood he used to
sing at family functions. After schooling, Cheema joined Lyallpur khalsa College,
Jalandhar. He joined the bhangra team of the college and won several prizes
at College level, University level and Punjab level. After completing his
graduation, Cheema went to 'Canada'. In Canada, Cheema met Balraj Bansi who
was highly impressed by Cheema's talent. Balraj Bansi being a Music pandit,
Cheema expressed his desire to learn music from him. Balraj Bansi gave Music
training to Cheema. Cheema has also learnt form B. S.Narang and respects him
and his great musical talent. Balraj Bansi and B. S.Narang are the two Ustaad's
who have been immensely helpful to his musical career. Cheema's biggest dream
came true when his first album was released by TPM in 1994. Punjabi folk Music
lover's applauded Cheema and his music. Subsquenlty every year a new album
was released. One of his most famous songs are Rang Rari Rari Rara and Rangla
Punjab.
Cricket:
Harbhajan Singh
was born in Jalandhar, Punjab, India; is an Indian cricketer and a specialist
bowler. He attended the Doaba School, and later, completed his schooling from
Parvati Jain High School. Nicknamed “Bhajji” and “The Turbanator” in the cricket
world, he is a right-arm off- spin bowler for the India national cricket team.
He has the second-highest number of Test wickets by an off spinner behind
Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan. I know most of Indians are very fond of
Cricket as a player or a cricket fan and should know more about Harbhajan
than myself. Harbhajan made his Test and One Day International debuts in early
1998. His career was initially beset by investigations into the legality of
his bowling action and disciplinary incidents that raised the ire of cricket
authorities. However in 2001, with leading leg spinner Anil Kumble injured,
Harbhajan's career was resuscitated after Indian captain Sourav Ganguly called
for his inclusion in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy team. In that series victory
over Australia, Harbhajan established himself as the team's leading spinner
by taking 32 wickets and becoming the first Indian bowler to take a hat trick
in Test cricket.Harbhajan reclaimed a regular position in the team upon his
return in late 2004. He was conferred the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest
civilian honour, in 2009.
Hockey:
Pargat Singh was
born at Village Mithapur near Jalandhar, Punjab,India. I been to this village
few times during childhood and also to participate in school level Hockey
Tournament. I think this village in now part of the recent urban development
around Jalandhar. After schooling, he also joined Lyallpur Khalsa College,
Jalandhar. Jalandhar had produced players like Ajit Pal Singh and Surinder
Sodhi. They are the man who had the great grade of excellence and both of
them have served as the former captains. Pargat Singh soon emerged as a class
of his own. He was included in the junior Indian hockey team at his teenage.
Pargat Singh possessed that kind of will which is indeed needed to excel and
to succeed. The natural and smooth process was the graduation into the senior
hockey team. Thus the journey of Pargat Singh geared up and he started rising
as the most talented player. In the 10-nation hockey tournament held at Hong
Kong, Pargat Singh represented India for the first time. The most amazing
part of Pargat Singh`s personality is that except a defender, he looks anything.
His slim figure and an average height made him far away from the picture of
a common defender. Indian hockey, today revolves round the stick work introduced
by him. Currently he is working with Punjab Police. For his outstanding services
towards his native country, he was awarded Padma Shree & Arjuna Award by Govt.
of India. These two awards are the most desirable and appreciated awards for
the players. This charismatic personality always sticks to his principle of
remaining `down to earth`.
As you’re reading about a Hockey Player, I would like to write few words about Sansarpur. This is not the name of any player or any big city. It's a small village in Punjab. This village feels proud because it has given 14 Olympian hockey stars to the world. An interesting fact about this village is that all the 14 Olympians bear same surname "Kular" and all were from the same street in this village of Sansarpur. No village or place in the world can claim to have more hockey stars than this village. The village is located just outside of Jalandhar in Punjab, near Jalandhar Cantonment. I feel proud to have participated in a school level hockey tournament at this village. The tradition of following one hockey star after another was achieved by this famous village Once it was called the "Nursery of Indian hockey." Sansarpur boasts eight gold medals, one silver, and six bronze medals in the Olympic Games and four gold and eight silver medals in the Asian Games. Five Olympians have also won the Arjana Award, which is the highest sports award in India. A few names who made Sansarpur feel proud are:
