Nine Steps For a Safest Journey By Taxi:

There are some things you definitely need to know about the fine art of negotiating and arriving safely.

1. Start your search for a Taxi before you even arrive in India. Ask your relatives/friends about the Taxi services they have used, any specific driver they could recommend.

2. On arrival, ask other travelers as well as locals what a specific ride should typically cost. This will give you an idea as to whether your potential Taxi stand is giving you a fair price. Remember to bargain as the first price that you’re provided will undoubtedly is far higher than the “real” price. If you are staying in a hotel, ask the hotel staff to arrange for a Taxi for you as the hotels have some kind of tie ups with the Taxi stands. Sometimes it could cost you little more than what you can arrange on your own.

3. If you can not speak Punjabi or Hindi, ask for a driver who speaks or understands some English (Usually taxi drivers are not literate enough to converse with you in English but some might know bits & pieces of English). This will clear up lot of your questions you may have like where you want to go, places to stop etc.

4. Be clear about what you’re paying for. These include: air-conditioning, gas, lodging (if you’re on an overnight trip) and food. Your driver may also be reluctant to take you to your final destination on longer trips, opting instead to drop you off on the outskirts of a city rather than deal with traffic in an unfamiliar place. This will leave you on your own to find another taxi that can finish the journey.

5. Before you depart, write down the agreed upon cost of the trip & show it to the driver so there is no question about whether it is 50 rupees or 500 rupees. Without this you could end up in a very sticky situation at the end of the day. Note down the license plate number of the vehicle you are hiring, name of the contact person at the Taxi stand in case of emergency & of course the phone number. It is better to get a mobile number for the contact person.

6. If at all possible, never take a taxi by yourself. If you’re traveling on your own, find someone with whom you can share a ride.

7. Indian drivers usually drive fast and the roads are terrible at some places. If you find yourself close to having a heart attack in the back seat of a taxi because of all the weaving back and forth, the hard stops and starts and the speed, simply ask your driver to slow down. Don’t be afraid to do this! Your driver may believe that it’s karmic law determining his fate but one can have a little more control over one's life.

8. Converse with your driver: ask about his family, sightseeing recommendations and favorite foods. Getting to know the locals may very well be the best part of your adventure.

9. Never disclose to the driver what you are carrying in your baggage or the kind of money you have in cash.

Have a Nice Journey!
